My love of spicy food

  • “As it should be” would be my usual answer when my wife asks if the dishes she cooked are “too spicy”.
  • I like to tease her, saying that living in Perth for too long has somehow weakened her spicy resistance.
  • I grew up eating spicy food. The state I’m from, Melaka (Malacca) is one of the few states in Malaysia that is famous for their spicy food ie Assam Pedas (a curry/gravy dish usually cooked with fish). You can check the short video here.
  • Sometimes a Malaysian would say – “malulah orang Melaka tak makan pedas” (what an embarrassment for a Malaccan to not eat spicy food).
Assam pedas (stingray) with rice. Da bomb! Taken from my own photo gallery 🙂
  • Assam pedas are usually a mix of soury, spicy taste. If it is still not spicy (enough), we’ll add some more sambal to it 😀
  • A friend once ridiculed me for not knowing the best place for assam pedas in Melaka.
  • I told him, the best Assam Pedas I had/have are always the one home cooked.
  • My late mum would cook it, as would her siblings (our go to nowadays when we are in Malaysia). I’m super blessed that my wife could cook it as well.
  • I tried Claypot Assam Pedas once; bad experience. Not trying them in the near future.

Until then, stay hungry, stay sane.
